UMT School of Law and Policy (SLP) hosted Barrister Salman Safdar, Advocate Supreme Court of Pakistan, on Friday, 13 December, 2019, for a guestlecture titled, ‘The Art of Advocacy and its Importance in Criminal Practice’. The audience included lawyers, faculty members, and law students of SLP. The event wascovered by Qanoondan.
Ms.Nyma Anwar Khan [Assistant Professor, SLP] began the event by welcoming Barrister Salman Safdarand the guests. She provided a brief introduction of Barrister Safdar and gave then gave thefloor to Dr. Usman Hameed [Director, SLP], who warmly welcomed Barrister Safdar and thanked him for taking time out to address the law students.
Barrister Safdarcommenced the talk by introducing the importance of public speaking and the ‘fears’ most of us face before addressing an audience. Before referring to the main topic, he stated that it was imperative to advise law students on certain matters. He, therefore,began his lecture by discussing the general decline in the reputation of lawyers and how this should be countered. While addressing the law students, he informed them that this profession was a noble one, henceforth, they all had a responsibility to conduct themselves properly. With regards to the amount of female lawyers in the practice, Barrister Safdar appreciated the fact that since 2017,the number of female lawyers was on the rise.
Barrister Safdar moved on to discuss the importance of presentation in court, including wearing the right attire. He stated that control over mind, body, and voice was crucial while presenting. He also stated that it was necessary to keep the audience engaged while delivering. Hefurther spoke about how important it was to ‘know thy judge’ before presenting oral arguments in a court. Towards the end, he appreciated the efforts of SLP in arranging such guest lectures for their law students.
The lecture was followed by an interactive Q&A session and was closed by Ms. Khan. Ms. Khan mentioned that the entire School was grateful for the opportunity of hosting Barrister Safdarand she also thanked him for taking time out from his various appointments to deliver the lecture. In addition to this, Ms. Khan also appreciated the efforts of the office holders of SLP’s Law and Policy Society (LAPS) in supervising the lecture series.
The conclusion of the guest lecture was followed by presenting of a souvenir to Barrister Salman Safdar along with a group picture with the faculty and students of School of Law and Policy.
