UMT School of Law and Policy (SLP) hosted Mr. Zafar Iqbal Kalanauri, Advocate Supreme Court of Pakistan for a visit on Tuesday, 01 September, 2020. The guest met with Director, SLP, Dr. Usman Hameed and members of the permanent faculty.
During this visit, Mr. Zafar spoke about the current legal education system. He pinpointed the flaws in the system and highlighted the need for an urgent reform. As per Advocate Kalanauri, the first step towards making a difference involved restructuring of the course outline of the taught law courses. The second reform, in his opinion, was having a qualified faculty in the law school, and lastly, the teaching methodology employed. He emphasized on changing the pattern of the current practice of teaching and informed the importance of involving students in a discussion whilst teaching. As per him, we should shift from the traditional methods and adopt newer methods in the legal system.
Advocate Kalanauri then moved on to discussing the dire need of having quality textbooks. He stressed that we need to fill this gap as currently we rely on foreign textbooks, having none of our own. He acknowledged that there were dozens of commentaries available, however, the availability of academic books was extremely limited.
After this meeting, Advocate Kalanauri was invited to meet with the Rector, UMT, Dr. Muhammad Aslam. Upon meeting with Dr. Aslam, Advocate Kalanauri appreciated the campus structure. They further discussed matters of mutual interest, focusing on education of the students.
In the end, Dr. Hameed and the faculty thanked Advocate Kalanauri for taking time out of his busy schedule to visit SLP.
