On 30th November 2018, The School of Law and Policy, partnered with the United Nations and the European Union to host a screening of the documentary, “17 and Sentenced to Die” exclusively for SLP students. The documentary is a part of the 4th Human Rights through Cinematography Film Festival, which marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to raise awareness of human rights amongst Pakistani audiences.
The documentary tells the story of Muhammad Iqbal, a juvenile offender who has been on death row for more than 20 years. It describes the circumstances of his arrest, illegal detention, torture, inadequate legal representation and eventual sentencing to point out the flaws of Pakistan’s criminal justice system.
The documentary screening was followed by an engaging discussion between SLP students, representatives of Justice Project Pakistan and Her Excellency Ms. Ingrid Johansson, Ambassador of Sweden in Pakistan.
