On 23 December 2017, Syed Imad-ud-Din Asad [Founding Director and Associate Professor, SLP] gave an interactive talk, titled “Introduction to Islamic Finance,” to the LL.B. (Part-II) candidates.
Prof. Asad started the talk by introducing the basic concepts of Islamic finance and its scope. Afterwards, he explained the various Islamic financial products and services, i.e., Musharaka, Mudaraba, Salam, Istisna, Murabaha, Ijara, Takaful, Sukuk, etc., and the role of AAOIFI and IFSB. This was followed by a survey of Islamic finance in certain Muslim countries, i.e., Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates, and certain non-Muslim countries, i.e., the United Kingdom and Luxemburg. In the end, he discussed various criticisms levelled against Islamic finance.
Throughout the talk, the students were encouraged to ask questions and share their concerns and views.
