On 13 December 2017, Syed Imad-ud-Din Asad [Founding Director and Associate Professor, SLP] gave a talk, titled “Gender and Pakistani Law,” to candidates pursuing M.Phil. in Gender studies at University of Management and Technology’s School of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Prof. Asad started the talk with an explanation of the legal status of intersex, transgender, and transsexual persons in Pakistan. He referred to the relevant constitutional provisions and judgements. He also addressedthe treatment of homosexuality in Pakistani law. Afterwards, he described various laws and legal provisions that women must be aware of and must be able to resort to whenever they experience harassment.
This was followed by a detailed discussion with the candidates and the host professor about honour killings, indigenous systems of justice, workplace harassment, etc.
