On 09 March 2018, Rai Muhammad Saleh Azam [LL.B. (Hons.) (London); Advocate, High Court] gave a talk on laws regarding sexual harassment and the various challenges concerning their implementation in Pakistan. The participants comprised of law students and law professors.
Mr. Azam gave a detailed presentation covering various aspects of the matter and explained the entire legal framework concerning the subject. He began by discussing Section 509 of the Pakistan Penal Code that deals specifically with any “word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman.”
Mr. Azam then moved on to discuss the Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act. He began by explaining the reasons behind its enactment. He stated that a large number of people felt that Section 509 was not sufficient. However, some people still question whether this Act was really necessary. This was followed by an in-depth analysis of the various provisions of the Act.
