Talk on the art and skill of corporate lawyering

Friday, January 10, 2014

On 10 January 2014, UMT School of Law and Policy [SLP] Law and Policy hosted a talk, titled "The Art and Skill of Corporate Lawyering," by Mujtaba Jamal Chaudhary [Bar-at-Law (Lincoln's Inn); Founder, Mujtaba Jamal Law Associates; Founder, MJLA Solutions]. The audience comprised of students and law professors.

Mr. Jamal began the talk by stating that its focus would be based on his own experience as a corporate lawyer. He stressed that a person would not be able to practice corporate law properly unless he/she had a strong grasp on law in general and moved on to discuss a few important points in this regard. He mentioned that in order to be a successful corporate lawyer a person needs to have the requisite mindset, i.e., he must display objectivity and logic in his approach towards different issues. Additionally, the person must have knowledge about the laws governing the legal procedure in Pakistan such as the Code of Civil Procedure, the Qanun-e-Shahdat, etc., before exploring corporate laws. In other words, the speaker felt that one should always start from the basics and move up. Lastly, Mr. Jamal was of the view that the lawyer should be the facilitator of legitimate business transactions instead of just pleasing the clients.

To ensure that the participants remained interested in the discussion, Mr. Jamal gave examples from his own legal practice reiterating the above-mentioned points. A Q&A session followed the talk. In the end, Syed Imad-ud-Din Asad [Founding Director and Associate Professor, SLP] thanked Mr. Jamal for taking out time to share his views and expertise on the matter.
