Talk on the use of force under the UN Charter

On 01 June 2018, UMT School of Law and Policy (SLP) hosted a talk, titled "Use of Force Under the UN Charter,” by BeataPolok [Ph.D. Candidate (Silesia)].

Ms. Polok gave a detailed presentation on the matter by elucidating upon the relevant provisions of the UN Charter. She began by analyzing the various constructions of the meaning of "use of force." She then moved on to discuss the exceptions to the prohibition of the use of force, including self-defense, anticipatory self-defense, and the collective self-defense, in the light of Article 51 of the UN Charter. She also explained the controversial inclusion of "humanitarian intervention," as another exception to the prohibition of the use of force. She concluded the talk by discussing the role of the UN Security Council and the criticism regarding its effectiveness.

This presentation was followed by a Q&A session.The participants included LL.B. and LL.M. in Commercial Law candidates, and law professors.
