On 30th October 2018, SLP organized a special talk for its students. Ummul Fayiza, women’s rights activist and Ph.D. candidate at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, gave an introduction to Muslim Personal Law in India. Saba Kareemi, Assistant Professor at SLP moderated the session. The audience included law students and faculty members. Ummul Fayiza talked about the development of Muslim personal law in its colonial context, discussing how conceptions of Islamic law changed from being lenient and pluralistic to rigid. Struggles with the colonial framework continued after India’s independence due to the contrasting notions of individualistic and communal legal systems present in the Indian constitution. Ummul Fayiza also discussed the Shah Bano and Shayara Bano cases in the context of different political movements in India.The talk was followed by a Q & A session.
