Labour Law reforms in the Punjab

UMT School of Law and Policy's faculty members have been engaged by Department of Labour and Human Resource, Government of the Punjab to assist the Department in the consolidation, simplification, and rationalization of labour laws in the province. This was agreed upon in a meeting hosted by Raja Ashfaq Sarwar [Minister, Department of Labour and Human Resource, Government of the Punjab] at his office on 01 April 2014.

UMT-SLP was represented by Syed Imad-ud-Din Asad, Rai M. Saleh Azam, Hajira Qureshi, and Saba Tariq. Muhammad Yousaf [Secretary, Department of Labour and Human Resources, Government of the Punjab] was also present.

During the meeting, Professor Asad also shared a concept note, prepared by Professor Azam, regarding how his team plans to assist the Department in this regard. Mr. Sarwar and his team appreciated the initiative and expressed their support for the measures proposed in it. Professor Asad and Mr. Sarwar decided that a committee should be formed to propose how the whole exercise should actually be conducted in an efficient manner. Mr. Sarwar also invited Professor Asads team to present the concept note at the upcoming South Asia Labour Conference in Lahore on 24-26 April 2014.

On 17 April 2014, the Department constituted a six-member committee to prepare a formal proposal and TORs for consolidation, simplification, and rationalization of labour laws in the Punjab. Professor Asad and Professor Azam have been appointed on the Committee. The Committees work is in progress and further details will soon be available.

On 24 April 2014, Professor Azam presented the above-mentioned concept note at South Asia Labour Conference.
