Thursday, December 07, 2017

On 07 December 2017, UMT School of Law and Policy (SLP) co-organized an international conference, titled “Islamic Finance: Between Religious Norms and Legal Practice,” at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgium. SLP was represented at the conference by a five-member delegation led by Syed Imad-ud-Din Asad [Founding Director and Associate Professor, SLP].

Prof. Asad was also one of the speakers and the title of his presentation was “Islamic Finance: Concepts, Transactions, Developments, and Critique.” Rodney Wilson (Durham Centre for Islamic Economics and Finance, UK), Mathias Rohe (Erlangen Center for Islam and Law in Europe, Germany), Hans Vesser (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Netherlands), Reza ZainJaufeerally (KatholiekeUniversiteit Leuven, Belgium), Martin Bunning (Ashurst, Germany), Mohamed Boulif (Islamic Finance Advisory and Assurance Services, Morocco), Amel Makhlouf (Affaki Avocats, France), and Mahmoud Al-Gamal (Rice University, U.S.A.) were the other speakers at the conference.

While introducing the conference, Wim De Cock [Professor, Faculty of Law, KU Leuven] paid a generous tribute to Prof. Asad. Among other things, Prof. De Cock mentioned that Islamic finance got introduced at KU Leuven’s faculty of law due to the academic collaboration between KU Leuven’s faculty of law and SLP, which Prof. Asad negotiated in 2014. He also mentioned that it was Prof. Asad who conceived the idea of the conference. Bernard Tilleman [Dean, Faculty of Law, KU Leuven] warmly reiterated the same at the conference dinner that was held on the same evening. Prof. Tilleman also mentioned, among other things, that the course on Islamic finance taught by Prof. Asad, at KU Leuven, is one of the most popular courses. Prof. Asad thanked Prof. Tilleman for patronizing such activities. He also thanked Prof. De Cock for making all the arrangements for the conference.
